Official Policy Verification & Source Check
- Official source: PromoWest Live — Frequently Asked Questions, Pittsburgh (Stage AE)
- Source type: Venue operator’s official FAQ page
- Last checked: October 14, 2026
- Confidence level: High — the official FAQ lists approved bag types with exact dimensions
- Notes on conflicting figures: None. The official 12″ x 12″ x 6″ clear tote and 4.5″ x 6.5″ x 3″ small bag limits are confirmed by independent Pittsburgh concert guides, and no Google AI Overview appeared in search results for this keyword.
How We Check This Policy: We verify every bag policy against the venue’s own published pages first, then cross-check the dimensions with a second independent source. Here the primary source is the PromoWest Live FAQ for its Pittsburgh venue, re-checked before writing. When sources disagree, the official venue figure wins and the competing figure is named here.
What Makes Stage AE’s Bag Policy Different
Most concert venues wave through a small non-clear purse, but Stage AE mirrors the NFL’s stadium policy almost exactly. Anything that isn’t clear and under 12″ x 12″ x 6″ has to be genuinely hand-size — stricter than the average amphitheater.
It matters more here because there’s no coat check or bag check at the gates. If your bag fails inspection, you must walk it back to your car or discard it — items left outside are removed. Get the bag right before you leave home.
Allowed Bags and Size Limits
| Bag Type | Entry Status | Max Dimensions | Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clear tote | Allowed | 12″ x 12″ x 6″ | Plastic, vinyl, or PVC only |
| One-gallon clear bag | Allowed | 12″ x 12″ x 6″ | Ziploc or similar, one-gallon or smaller |
| Small bag / clutch | Allowed | 4.5″ x 6.5″ x 3″ | Hand-size; strap optional; need not be clear |
| Regular purse | Not allowed | — | Only if within the 4.5″ x 6.5″ x 3″ limit |
| Backpack | Not allowed | — | Banned at all PromoWest venues, any size |
| Drawstring bag / tote / carry-all | Not allowed | — | Non-clear bags over the small-bag limit banned |
What a Compliant Bag Looks Like
Picture a clear plastic or vinyl tote, about the size of a sheet of paper on each side and six inches deep, holding only what you need. Beside it, a tiny clutch the size of your hand — roughly 4.5″ x 6.5″ x 3″ — works even without a strap.
Measure before you go, not at the gate. Soft-sided totes that bulge when stuffed can read as oversized, so keep yours flat and tidy.
Purses and Totes
Everyday purses almost always fail here. A standard purse is wider than 6.5″ and thicker than 3″, and the venue names purses among the banned large bags. Transfer the essentials — phone, card wallet, lip balm, earplugs — into a compliant clear tote or micro clutch.
Diaper and Medical Bags
The official FAQ publishes no blanket diaper bag exception, so contact Stage AE the day of the event if you have medical needs. Bring prescription medication in a sealed package with the printed label, in a quantity appropriate for the show, and carry it in your compliant clear bag for a fast inspection.
Security Screening: How Entry Actually Works
Expect a thorough process, not a cursory glance. Bag contents are checked item by item, with pat-downs as part of the routine — arrive early for sold-out shows and lawn events.
Tickets are scanned after security, and the venue is fully cashless — cards work everywhere, and Apple Pay and Google Pay are accepted at bars. Download your mobile tickets before arriving, since cell service on the North Shore clogs with a full crowd. Doors open at the time printed on your ticket; music starts about an hour later.
On-Site Bag Storage
There is no coat check, and prohibited bags will not be stored on venue property. If your bag fails, you return it to your car or discard it. The one paid option is eLockers, offered by the venue — check availability and pricing on the official site. The simplest plan is to bring only a compliant bag.
Food, Beverage and Other Prohibited Items
Outside food and beverages are banned, including bottled water. Use the venue’s water fountains instead. Bottles, flasks, cans, and coolers are all on the prohibited list.
The list is long and concert-specific. Blankets, tarps, lawn chairs, and cushions are banned — you’ll sit directly on the lawn — and so are umbrellas, so bring a poncho since shows run rain or shine. Selfie sticks, GoPros, pro cameras, recording devices, laser pointers, strollers, chains, and spiked items are banned too, and artists can add items for specific shows — check the event page the day of.
Prohibited Items
- Backpacks — banned at all PromoWest venues, regardless of size
- Purses, drawstring bags, totes, carry-alls — anything over 4.5″ x 6.5″ x 3″ that isn’t a clear 12″ x 12″ x 6″ tote
- Outside food and beverages — including bottled water; use venue water fountains
- Bottles, flasks, cans, and coolers
- Blankets, tarps, lawn chairs, and cushions
- Umbrellas — bring a poncho instead (shows are rain or shine)
- Selfie sticks, monopods, tripods, and GoPros
- Professional cameras, removable lenses, and recording devices — camera policy varies by artist
- Laser pointers, fireworks, and flammable items
- Strollers, pets, helmets, and sports equipment
- Weapons — including knives, mace, and pepper spray
- Signs, flyers, totems, confetti, glitter, and balloons
- Aerosol sunscreen and aerosol cans — lotion sunscreen is permitted
- Unlabeled medication or illegal drugs
Packing Strategy for Faster Entry
- Go clear and small: A clear 12″ x 12″ x 6″ tote is the fastest path through inspection — security sees everything without digging.
- Pack flat and visible: Lay items out so nothing hides in folds or pockets. Less digging means a faster line for everyone.
- Skip the borderline bag: If it’s “probably okay,” it probably isn’t. Borderline bags are exactly what a strict gate turns away.
- Ditch the backpack entirely: Even a small one is banned. Don’t bring one “just in case” — you’ll walk it back to the car.
- Leave blankets and umbrellas home: Both are prohibited. A poncho handles rain; a jacket handles a cold lawn.
Category-Specific Packing Tips
Indoor concertgoers: Most shows are standing-room GA, so pack light. A micro clutch with phone, ID, card, and earplugs is all you need — you won’t miss the extra weight shoulder-to-shoulder.
Lawn and outdoor fans: No blankets, chairs, or cushions — you’re on the grass. Bring a poncho for rain, keep sunscreen to lotion form, and let a clear tote carry your layers.
Parents with kids: All patrons need a ticket, regardless of age. Skip the stroller (prohibited) and the diaper bag — pack kid essentials in your clear tote, and check with the venue ahead of time about anything medical.
Travelers: Staying downtown or at Station Square? Take the T subway to the North Shore for free instead of parking. Bring your compliant bag on transit — there is no storage at the gate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I bring a backpack to Stage AE?
No. Backpacks are banned at Stage AE and every PromoWest venue, regardless of size. Leave it at home or in your car.
What size bag can I bring to Stage AE?
Two options: a clear tote of plastic, vinyl, or PVC at max 12″ x 12″ x 6″, or a hand-size bag at max 4.5″ x 6.5″ x 3″. One-gallon clear bags like Ziplocs also qualify.
Does Stage AE allow regular purses?
Only if the purse fits within the 4.5″ x 6.5″ x 3″ limit. Everyday purses are almost always too big, and the venue lists purses among banned bag types. A clear tote is the safer choice.
Is there bag storage at Stage AE?
No coat check, and the venue won’t store prohibited bags. eLockers are offered for purchase. Otherwise, non-compliant bags go back to your vehicle or get discarded.
Can I bring food or water into Stage AE?
No outside food or beverages, including bottled water. Water fountains are available inside. Bottles, flasks, cans, and coolers are all prohibited.
Can I leave and re-enter Stage AE during a show?
No — once you leave, you can’t come back in. Bring everything you need (medication, layers, poncho) before passing security.

Conclusion
Stage AE’s bag policy is simple but strict: clear totes up to 12″ x 12″ x 6″, hand-size bags up to 4.5″ x 6.5″ x 3″, and no backpacks, purses, or drawstring bags. With no coat check and no re-entry, the bag you walk in with is the bag you’re stuck with. Pick a compliant bag, pack light, and arrive early.
Check the official PromoWest FAQ before your show, since artists can add prohibited items for specific events. With the right bag, all that’s left is the music — indoors in the concert hall or out on the lawn under the Pittsburgh skyline.
